Poetry Competition 2000:

Entry Rules and Regulations

The Competition Winners

Letter to Schools Netionwide

Supported personally by The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Tony Blair, MP , I am writing to invite your pupils to enter this, 5p a word, Poetry Competition 2000, about which you may well have read in the press last week.

Our prime objective in launching this Competition is to raise funds for orphans; it is designed not only to support the National Literacy Strategy in schools but also to encourage children, through their creative activities, to have a sense of involvement with the needs of the less fortunate. The poems for entry into the Competition may be on any subject and of any length.

As an incentive to schools in Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire, to maximise the number of entries, the Melkonian Foundation will be making donations to schools totalling £6,750; prizes will also be given to the winners totalling £1,050. Please see details in the enclosed Entry Rules and Regulations .

As part of its fund-raising programme over the past 18 years, the Foundation staged an emergency concert at the Royal Albert Hall on 20 th May 1999, assisting Save the Children’s ongoing work during the war in the Balkans. His Royal Highness, Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales, The Princess Royal, and The Prime Minister, once again extended their support.

We aim to promote your pupils’ awareness of the hardship faced by orphans every day by asking you to display the posters, which we have sent to you, prominently in your school. You are welcome to photocopy the posters for display in the classrooms.

Your assistance in this matter would be much appreciated.

Yours sincerely,

Pedro Pr á -Lopez,
Hon. Vice-Chairman
