Poetry Competition 2000

Competition Winners

 

1. Each poem submitted must be presented as follows
a.
On one side of a sheet of paper clearly write or type:
The full name of the competitor
Age
Competitor's class/year
Name of School
Category of School: Infant (5 - 7 years) Junior (7 -11 years), or Secondary (11 - 18 years)
Full address of School
School's Telephone number
b.
The submitted poem must be clearly written or typed on the reverse side of the paper.
c.
The competitor may continue on a second and subsequent page(s) if the poem cannot be written on one page. These pages must be securely fastened together.
d.
The poem may be on any subject.
e.
Each competitor may submit any number of poems.
f.
The submitted poems may be of any length.
g.
Each poem submitted should be accompanied by a donation of 5p (five pence) per word.
  For example:
  A poem of 30 words
A poem of 55 words
A poem of 113 words

£2.75
£5.65
  [Competitors may seek sponsorship for their poem(s) from family and friends. Competitors may donate more than 5p (five pence) per word should they so wish].
2. The total number of words and the amount of the donation must be clearly written beneath the final verse of the poem.
3. All cheques or postal orders must be crossed and made payable to: "Melkonian Foundation Poetry 2000"
PLEASE DO NOT SEND CASH
[Schools may collect all donations from their pupils and send one cheque to the Foundation together with the submitted poems. Schools submitting more than 75 poems may retain £5 (five pounds) to cover the cost of postage and packing].
4. All entries must be sent to:

5. All entries must be received before 8th May, 2000.
     
6. Competitor
a.
The term 'competitor' shall be deemed in all cases to refer to the sole author of the submitted poem(s).  
b.
The submitted poem(s) must be a new and original work which has not been previously published.  
     
7. Winning Entrants
     
a.
Selection will be based entirely on literary merit.  
b.
The names of the winners and that of their schools will be announced to the press not later than Friday 15th September, 2000; the winners and schools qualifying for donations will be notified at the same time.  
     
8. Adjudicators
     
a.
All entries will be judged by a panel chaired by the writer and broadcaster, Hallam Tennyson. Mr Tennyson is the great-grandson of Alfred, Lord Tennyson, and was previously Assistant Head of BBC Drama.  
b.
The decision of the judging panel will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.  
     
9. Awards
     
a.
There will be nine winners from schools in Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire (three from each of the following categories: Infant, Junior and Secondary, see section 1.a.).
The winner placed first in each category will receive £200.00 (Total £600.00)
The winner placed second in each category will receive £100.00 (Total £300.00)
The winner placed third in each category will receive £ 50.00 (Total £150.00)
 
b.
* Nine schools in Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire will qualify for the following donations:
The three schools at which the winner placed first in each category is (or was) a pupil will each receive £1,000.00 (Total £3,000.00)
The three schools at which the winner placed second in each category is (or was) a pupil will each receive £ 750.00 (Total £2,250.00)
The three schools at which the winner placed third in each category is (or was) a pupil will each receive £ 500.00 (Total £1,500.00)
 
c.
The winning poems and a number of other entries selected by the judging panel will be published under the title Have You Seen this Child? Poems for Orphans.  
d.
A selection of poems will also be published on the www.melkonian-foundation.org.uk
 
     
10. Organisers' Rights
     
  The prime objective of the Competition is to maximise the funds raised for orphans. Therefore, by entering this competition the competitor or his/her parent or guardian agrees to assign to the organisers any consent required under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 in order to enable the organisers to utilise any submitted poems by way of published or printed material, electronic media or otherwise. The organisers reserve the right to publish or print for sale the winning poems and other poems selected by the competition judges on paper or by electronic means, or any other means.  
     
11. Cheques and Postal Orders
     
  All cheques and postal orders for the appropriate donation must be crossed and made payable to: "Melkonian Foundation Poetry 2000" and sent with the submitted poems to:

* If the total amount raised by the entry donations falls short of the amount to be donated as prizes, 9.b. will not apply.
