Frequently Asked Questions:

How much does it cost?

It costs just £17 a month to sponsor a child. The Melkonian Foundation is committed to seeing that at least 80% of the funds are used to directly benefit the children. We are committed to careful management of administration costs to ensure that the benefits of your contribution are maximised.

How does my support help?

Ideally all the money you send will be used specifically to fund the place in the home of the individual child in question. This will include food, clothing, medicine and the cost of schooling. However, contributions must be used to benefit all the children in the home equally; therefore your donation may in part help to support other children awaiting sponsorship.

How long am I expected to continue being a sponsor?

At the Melkonian Foundation, we like to see sponsorship as a long-term project. Every month that you continue to sponsor a child makes a huge difference to them, and we endeavour to see that a child receives sponsorship in the home until he or she is 18. Circumstances however can change during the sponsorship, both for you, or your sponsored child. We don't expect you to guarantee your commitment, and likewise we cannot guarantee the length of time the child will remain in the project. Should you feel unable to continue supporting your sponsored child, simply write and tell us. No explanation is required, and we will endeavour to find him or her a new sponsor.

Can I choose the child I sponsor?

Some sponsors prefer to choose a boy or a girl, or may wish to support a child similar in age to their own children or grandchildren. We do try to accommodate all requests, though we cannot guarantee this always to be possible.

Can I write to the child I sponsor?

Yes, it's not compulsory, but we do encourage you to write to the child and send photos of yourself and family. We particularly recommend the participation of children in sending letters and pictures to the sponsored child. The experience can be very mutually beneficial as the children learn about each others cultures, lives and hobbies. Please be aware however that letters may have to be translated, so try to keep them reasonably short and simple. All letters sent to your sponsored child must be sent via this address:- Melkonian Foundation Child Sponsorship….

How do I pay?

Direct Debit is the easiest, safest and most cost efficient way to pay your donations. Provided that you have a UK Bank or Building Society account from which Direct Debit is acceptable, we can collect your monthly donation automatically. You can cancel a Direct Debit at any time by writing to your Bank or Building Society, and sending us a copy of the letter.

Alternatively you can pay your donations to us by cheques made payable to the ‘Melkonian Foundation' quoting your name and sponsor reference number.

You can make your gift go further through Gift Aid Declaration . This enables us to claim back from the Inland Revenue the Tax that you will have paid on the money you donate. Gif tAid enables us to reclaim the tax you have paid on all donations paid to the Melkonian Foundation, which increases their value by 28%, at no further cost or inconvenience to yourself.

For your donation to be eligible for Gift Aid you must pay an amount of Income or Capital Gains Tax at least equal to the tax the Melkonian Foundation will reclaim on your donations in the tax year. Completing a Gift Aid Declaration does not affect your tax status or commit you to supporting the work of the Melkonian Foundation for a specific length of time. To make a Gift Aid Donation, simply tick the box when prompted on the sponsorship application form, or send us an e-mail with your name and sponsor reference number.
