Vartan Melkonian

Vartan Melkonian, an orphan, has personal experience of growing up as a child alone on the streets in times of conflict in the Middle East. He is without formal musical education but the freshness of his approach has appealed greatly to audiences around the world. It is this very lack of formal training that has led to an uncertainty of response among some critics - the man with a fascinating story.

It will bean electrifying atmosphere at the Royal Festival Hall in a programme which will include Prokfiev, Romeo and Juliet (Dance of the Knights), Elgar, Nimrod (Variation on an original theme), Ravel, Bolero, Melkonian, Fly Away, Mozart 40 Andante and will round off with the warm sound of Tchaikovsky's, Swan Lake.

To herald the Christmas season, Vartan Melkonian will conduct the London Philharmonic Orchestra on the South Bank in a Favourite Classics concert supporting Save the Children's work for Children of Iraq on Monday 1st December 2003 at 7:30.

The money raised by the concert will support Save the Children's existing work in Iraq, including work with vulnerable children to ensure that the effects of the conflict on their education, health and wellbeing are minimised.

Vartan says "The children of Iraq were suffering before the war began and Save the Children has worked with them for many years. I personally know the devastating impact that conflict can have on children of all ages, especially those that are alone and vulnerable. The support that is being given by Save the Children now will make a vital difference and ensure that children are given the chance of a brighter future, as I was".

Ticket prices range from £8 to £29.
